What is Detoxification in Relations to Weight Loss?

We have all heard about the role of detoxification in creating great health; and many of us have experienced the detox process, some by attending a health retreat designed for this purpose, and some by virtue of a supervised fast or cleansing program initiated by a naturopathic practitioner.

But what exactly is detoxification, and what is happening in the body when we engage in this type of specialized weight lose program?

Essentially, detoxification is the body`s ongoing process of neutralizing and eliminating toxins from the tissues and organs of the body. It is the job of the liver to take harmful chemicals, toxins and byproducts of metabolism from the bloodstream, and alter them into safer substances to be excreted from the body through the organs of disposal.

This cleansing process is always happening automatically, just like we breathe and our hearts beat, and it's not something we need to think about on a day to day basis. It is a natural state of the body to continually cleanse itself, and most of the time we don't even notice the cleansing process is happening.

Toxic substances can rise substantially in the body, with the amount of potentially harmful chemicals in our environment, our food, our personal care and cleansing products, in the air and water, and in the recreational drugs and medications that we take. It is estimated that there are 50,000+ chemicals in production, with 10,000 of these used in food processing, in which we consume on a daily basis.

When the liver is unable to detox or cleanse the excess amount of circulating toxins, they can continue to move through the body, causing disruption and damage, before eventually being stored mainly in the fat cells of our organs and tissues, often being stored for years or decades.

Depending on the type of toxins held in the body, we can experience all sorts of chronic and degenerative health conditions that have their underlying cause in an overwhelming burden of chemical overload. For example, one molecule of mercury can inhibit the function of up to 1000 zinc molecules.

To get the most out of your weight loss, do a detox diet. Not only will you lose extra pounds, but you'll cleanse your body of harmful impurities that would eventually cause you disease and illness.

By engaging in a "detoxification program" we're actively assisting and supporting the body in its own natural cleansing process, to help cleanse the body of substances that may be detrimental to our health.

The difficulty of weight lose, or losing weight

Although a weight loss diet may help you lose a few pounds quickly, following a restrictive diet long-term is unrealistic and requires extraordinary commitment. Once you stop dieting and exercising, the weight comes back. Some people fall into an unhealthy cycle of losing and gaining weight, which may be harder on the body than just being overweight.

It may be difficult to overcome the roadblocks to weight loss: lack of time for exercise, family and work commitments, easy access to less-healthy foods, and illness or injury.

Research shows that people who are most successful in improving their health have made the broader and more significant shift to a healthier lifestyle rather than targeting weight lose alone. A lifestyle of healthy eating and regular physical activity will improve your health and quality of life, no matter what you weigh.

The key to successful weight loss is to detox, and a commitment to making permanent changes in your diet and exercise habits.


Health: A Detoxification Weight Loss Program Involves the Following:

There are many styles of detox programs, but the best ones are those undertaken in an environment where all of these factors can be addressed, and there's an opportunity to rest, relax, and focus on healing.

1) Health: Weight lose requires lowering ingested chemicals to detox
The first part of detoxification involves lowering the ingestion of not only chemicals in the diet, but often also lowering the amount of food consumed, to give the digestive system a rest and to allow energy to be diverted to cleansing rather than digesting.

Fasting is a universal natural response to disease, and there are several ways to fast; water only, juices, and mono foods being the most common.

To this end, most detox diets will involve a period of fasting, such as drinking only freshly made vegetable juices for several days. Only organic produce should be used for the juicing, to ensure no pesticides or other chemicals or contaminants are consumed.

After a juice fast, it is sensible to spend a period of time eating plain organic fruits and vegetables to allow the body time to adjust to whole foods again, while keeping ingested toxins to a very low level.

Water fasting can be too extreme for most people in today`s world, as we are carrying such a load of toxins that we need more than just our stores of nutrients to help the body to cleanse them properly. Many people are already malnourished and depleted, so water fasting is not appropriate in these cases health wise.

Fresh organic juice provides a plentiful supply of enzymes to assist in the breakdown of toxic matter, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to protect from free radical damage.

24 hours after starting a juice program, pancreatic enzymes are no longer needed for the digestion of food and can start digesting waste matter in the body.   • Liver -  The liver is the organ which does the most work during a detox. It takes pollutants out of the bloodstream, identifies them and makes them safe for excretion from the body. The first stage of this is called Phase 1 Liver Detox and that involves making fat soluble toxins more water soluble, so that they can be dispose through the bowels or the kidneys. The outcome of Phase 1 is highly reactive toxic metabolites waiting for Phase 2 treatment. A high level of antioxidants are needed to balance and neutralize these substances. Phase 2 Liver Detox uses various protein molecules to bind these intermediate products and make them safe to be dispose from the body.
  • Bowel - A lot of toxins are excreted through the bowel, so a well-functioning, moving bowel is an essential part of the detox. Many detox programs include bowel herbs, bulking fiber such as psyllium husks, products like bentonite clay which cleanse toxins, or cleansers such as enemas or colonic irrigation. By cleansing and supporting the bowel in this way, we ensure the maximum removal of toxic substances from the body.
  • Kidneys - The kidneys are another organ that filters and processes a large number of toxins. During a cleanse, drinking plenty of fluid supports kidney function, and using juices such as watermelon, celery, cucumber or black cherry can all enhance their detoxification ability. Kidneys are also the repository, for our life force, so plenty of rest, keeping warm and gentle movement, will all help to revitalize and nourish our kidney energy.
  • Skin - The skin can release many toxins, especially when it is helped by dry skin body brushing, and by spending time in a sauna. Both of these practices enhance the effectiveness of our detoxification, not only by allowing the release of toxins through the skin, but by moving our lymphatic system which drains and transports many waste products.
  • Breath - Yes, you will often have "detox breath" during a cleanse! Our lungs are powerful movers of toxic matter, and deep breathing exercises are another tool we use to support our body to cleanse itself.

Health: Weight Loss Requires Detoxification Period!


Being overweight and suffering from obesity are becoming all too common these days.  This carries a huge load of negatives such as health risks and illness.  It is for this reason you must detoxify your body to obtain true weight loss.

That means getting rid of anything that’s man made.  I would scrap any product that had artificial sweetners, additives, artificial coloring and preservatives in it.

I would get my hands on a green drink too ASAP.  I found some liquid chlorophyll in my health food store a few months back and I liked it.  I made a drink out of that with some purified water.  I found this naturally uplifting and it put my body in check.  My pH level increased to a deep rich green color, (yes I use the testing strips) in a matter of a few days.

You will notice some differences when you start to cleanse your body.  My sweat didn’t stink anymore and I had no foul odors.  This sanitized my body from the inside out.  I started to notice real change too in how I approached food once I was cleaned out.   I didn’t have cravings for things that I thought I would miss.  In fact, I had gotten so wound up in my work that I would forget to eat breakfast and lunch.  I am not suggesting that you do this but my energy level soared through the roof.

It was after I had experienced this body cleansing (detoxification), that I decided to do something with my exercise program and the foods I ate.   I wanted to reach higher levels of this type of living.  I learned one thing that Spring and that was detoxification is the key to a better life, and true weight loss.

The weight will start to come off of you after you detox and cleanse your body.

I got the phone call early on a Monday.  It was from California and I had no idea what I was about to learn from the amazing Dr. Berneathy.  Dr. B, as he is affectionately known, has created a dynamite weight loss formula for his patients in his Chiropractic clinic.  I was about to embark on a real education of weight lose detoxification.

If you want to lose the weight then you will have to lose any type of victim mentality and get positive.  I learned from Dr. B that weight loss was not that hard to do.  This guy had the secret that so many other programs out there seemed to miss entirely.

I am going to tell you some of these strategies  of weight loss detoxification now. 


 

Lesson 1:  You Got To Detoxify (Cleanse) – Now what does this exactly mean?  You have to get rid of all the junk in your diet.  If you are serious about weight loss then you must get rid of the excess garbage in your daily diet.  There is a time period here that you will have to observe.  This is a multi-step detox process that you must start on if you want to lose the unwanted pounds.

Lesson 2:  Keeping A Positive Mindset – Getting powerful results starts with a healthy mindset.  I suggest getting rid of all the substances in your daily pattern that lead to racing thoughts.  In this category I include caffeinated drinks, alcohol, sugar and other stimulants.  I recently switched to herbal teas from around the world and noticed a huge difference in every aspect of my life.

Lesson 3:  Move – You got to get in motion if you want to lose weight.  Life is about motion, it is about doing, it is about experiencing new things, you got to get out of your living environment and breathe fresh air.  Even if you are not used to exercising you have to get up and out.  Mobility is everything.  This is going to help you build up your mindset to finally exercise.

Lesson 4:  Water Based Foods – Just like Dr. B said do not eat junk foods.  Artificial colors and flavors are ultimately bad for you and they must be avoided.  Taking the bold step to water based foods will take some imagination.  There are a lots of great things to be said about what kind of vegetables you buy.  You can either buy organic produce, eat vegan, or go totally vegetarian.  Avoid taking too many radical steps to reach your goal.  Your shifts in this area should be gradual in respect to weight loss detoxification.

Lesson 5:  Love Yourself – I always found that I usually got the munchies around 10 PM every night.  This became a problem but I found ways around it.  I was never tempted by late night advertising by Taco Bell because I had problems with dairy and my sinuses.  I was able to find some guilt free snacks to help tide me over.  I found things like black bean dip and blue corn chips that were fat free.  I also found this amazing Green Tea Non Dairy Ice Cream.  If you are willing to stretch your imagination you will come across some incredible finds.  This is totally up to you.  The other thing I can tell you is to get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water. Water is very essential to detox and cleanse the body of toxins.

Lesson 6:  Take Control – Avoid being a victim whenever possible.  Avoid living in a constant state of “reaction”, (ex: you’ll never believe what this guy said to me, you’ll never believe what happened to me today, I could only get that promotion if so and so was out of the way etc.).  These types of inner conflicts are not healthy for the mind.  You are controlling the situations around you.  It is for this reason you must have self mastery in the area of weight lose.

Lesson 7:  Eat Often – You can achieve great things with smaller meals.  You can eat multiple times a day and not have to worry about going hungry.  If you are eating the right things in the right combination then hunger pangs are a thing of the past.  You are going to be well settled and will not have to worry about calorie counting.  The body will start to adjust to your eating habits and you won’t have to worry about how much you need to eat.  Your portions will be smaller as your body requires less.

Dr. Berneathy is well schooled in all of these areas.  He is an abundant wealth of knowledge and I decided to take him on as a client.  These areas of weight loss intrigued me and yet I wondered how I could apply these rules to my life.

We talked about fundamentals and what it would take to get fantastic results.  Weight loss is a complicated game if you don’t approach it the right way.  That is why there are so many diets that fail and fall off the market place.  But talking to Dr. B made things really simple.  We need to stop stuffing ourselves with fake food.  But more importantly we had to follow a process that would help eliminate waste before the pounds would fall off.

The importance of this subject matter cannot be underplayed.  Disease can settle in if the body is not where it should be health wise.  Weight loss is a very serious subject matter and you should take proper steps to take care of your body through detoxification.

As Dr. Berneathy says, “You only got one you!”, and I couldn’t agree more.
